Not only can VoIP be used for voice, it can also be used to transmit data like file transfers (pretty much any kind of file – zipping your files will GREATLY increase your transfer speed rate), media such as photos and even music and movies.
The reason for the sudden explosion in the use of VoIP was mostly due to it’s cost, which if you use an application like Skype, not only can you call someone anywhere in the world for no additional cost at all (other than your internet connection), but you can even use a webcam to chat online “face-to-face”.
In poorer regions around the world this technology was possibly life changing. Especially countries like the Philippines where the migrant work force is scattered around the globe. Friends and family would normally need to make a traditional international land-line phone call which would be very expensive.
Now with the use of many different free applications, calls that would cost quite a bit to make are now free. In addition you’re able to opt to use video chat as well! Who would choose to pay for a phone call when they can have a video chat for free? PLUS the added benefits of free data transfers.
And today there is no shortage of software and apps to use. Most are free. Below is a quick list just to give you an idea of what’s out there…
Skype – A free to use down-loadable software that you add to your computer. Skype has been around a long time and I’ve used it for many years myself. Although there are glitches at times, it has allowed me to keep up with far away friends at pretty much no cost to myself.
letsBrik – The best part of letsBrik is that rather than needing to download yet another software to your computer, this alternative is completely web based. All you need is a browser and an internet connection. And that means you can use it on any device that has an internet connection. Even your tablet. And it doesn’t matter what operating system you’re using, Windows or Mac.
PopTox is similar to letsBrik in that it is also a browser based application and also let’s you have the freedom of using any operating system and not gobbling up your computer’s hard drive space. It even looks (a little) like a phone when you arrive at their site with a dial pad that you can just type someone’s phone number and call away!
